Virginia Canyon Mountain Park

The City's open-space park on the slopes of Virginia Canyon, with directional downhill bike trails and hiking trails from Miners Point back toward town; free on foot or by bike, open from an hour before sunrise to an hour after sunset.

Virginia Canyon Mountain Park is public open space owned by the City of Idaho Springs; its trail system, Trek Trails, was built with the Colorado Mountain Bike Association (COMBA). The City’s April 2026 news release announced the trails’ reopening on 25 April 2026 with new kiosk maps and a new Shimano Trail Born Hub as the base for Gauntlet Gold, Panic Switch and Old School; Rosa Gulch was extended to Santa Fe Mine Road, and Drop Shaft and Eureka to the top of the park at Miners Point, bringing the total to over 16 miles. The Mighty Argo cable car, which carries riders and their bikes to Miners Point, sells the ride up; the park itself is free to enter under your own power.

The City’s rules: open from an hour before sunrise to an hour after sunset; dogs on a leash at all times; no fires, no camping, no motorized vehicles except Class 1 e-mountain bikes; pack out what you pack in; keep away from wildlife. The Mighty Argo, which is not the park’s manager, says the terrain is steep and technical, intermediate and above, with no green beginner downhill trails, no bike patrol (Clear Creek EMS and Fire have jurisdiction, and 911 is the call in an emergency), and historic shafts and adits across the hillside, and asks visitors to stay on marked trail and never enter an opening. Its pages give other trail mileages than the City’s (15 miles on one page; 14 of biking and 7 of hiking on another) and name Rosa Gulch, 4.2 miles and 1,300 vertical feet out and back, as the main hiking trail.

The rules and the “Trails Open” notice were read on the City’s park page, the parking advice on its Virginia Canyon parking page and the trail details in its news release of 15 April 2026, all on 10 October 2026; the City’s news page carried notices posted in September 2026.
